Ayurveda, has its origins in India, where it has been practiced for over 5000 years. The word "ayur" meaning "life" while "veda" signifies "knowledge".
Ayurveda teaches what should and should not be done to acquire perfect health, live in harmony with our environment and strike a balance between physical and mental wellbeing.
Ayurvedic principles:
Ayurveda provides a range of disciplines to achieve good health involving oil based massage, dietetics, herbal remedies, yoga and lifestyle. According to Ayurvedic principles the universes consists of five elements called “Pancha, Maha, Boothas” these being ether, earth, water, fire and air - the human body being composed of a combination of these. Furthermore there are three principal bio-energies known as doshas or tridoshas made of a combination of the five elements called:
• vata corresponding to air (air + ether)
• pita corresponding to bile (fire + water)
• Kapha corresponding to phlegm (water + earth)
Each person is born with a unique constitution determined at the time of conception. A harmonious balance of the three doshas is the ideal. Imbalance is the result of poor health resulting, from amongst other things, overwork, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. A combination of balanced diet, yoga and Ayurvedic massage will help to restore the balance.
